Discovering Her Passion
Selma graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2017 after completing her undergraduate degree in Natural Science in just three years! Right from there she accepted a position with the UPMC Department of Dermatology as a Histotechnician in the Mohs Surgical Department, where she utilized her background to assist in surgeries and work independently in the laboratory. While working in the laboratory she quickly recognized that her position, thus the time it took to process the excised tissue, was the limiting factor in the surgical cases in the Department of Dermatology. It was then her passion for advancing healthcare was born, she remembers this fondly,

“I found myself constantly thinking of various ways to optimize various daily tasks and ultimately, the patient experience. By modifying existing techniques to produce quality results at a faster rate, patients would have their results earlier, allowing their reconstructive surgery to begin sooner, thus opening up more time for the surgeon to perform an additional surgery each day. By combining my passion for medicine and patient care with the ambition to improve healthcare through invention and innovation, I knew I had established a combination of interests that would lead me to a future occupation I would enjoy.”

Selma’s clinical background has helped her establish a professional relationship with two clinical mentors so far in this program! In the future, Selma hopes to pursue R&D for medical products in order to make an impact in the lives of patients worldwide!
